National Westminster Bank Plc, commonly known as NatWest, is the largest retail and commercial bank in the United Kingdom and has been part of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc (RBS) since 2000. The Royal Bank of Scotland Group is ranked as the second largest bank in the world by assets.
In the 2007/2008 financial crisis HM Government took a 58% stake in the RBS Group (of which NatWest is a part) in a bid to recapitalise the company.
The Treasury subscribed to £5bn in preference shares and underwrote the issuance of a further £15bn of new ordinary shares which were offered to RBS shareholders and new institutional investors at the fixed price of 65.5p.
Following discussions and an agreement with the European Commission last summer (as part of the State Aid requirements) RBS has had to sell 311 Royal Bank branded branches, plus 7 NatWest branches along with the relevant customers to Santander UK.
